Now Casting For:
ANTIGONE female, 20-30

One of the daughters of Oedipus.  She is very passionate and like her father, suffers from the tragic flaw of pursuing what is right no matter the consequences.

ISMENE female, 20-30

The other daughter of Oedipus.  She is not as passionate as her sister, but though she is more timid, she is no less willing to sacrifice herself for the sake of the ones she loves.

EURYDICE female, 30-60

The wife of King Creon.  She is a troubled woman who has lost her eldest son to war and her youngest son to her husband’s stubbornness.  This is a cameo role.

CREON male, 30-60 The King of Thebes.  He is a very proud and stubborn ruler who sees compromise as weakness.
HAEMON male, 20-30

The youngest son of Creon and Eurydice, who is engaged to Antigone.  He is the ideal of a prince, intelligent, daring and loyal.

The GUARD any age/gender

Captures Antigone in the act of disobeying King Creon.  The Guard is the comic relief of the play.

The FIRST and SECOND MESSENGERS   any age/gender

Attendants to King Creon.  Their exposition describes the tragic events at the end of the play.

The CHORUS OF THEBAN ELDERS any age/gender

Moves the plot forward through exposition and choral response.  Chorus will consist of 4 to 6 actors who will speak in unison and individually.

TEIRESIAS any gender, 40-70

The blind prophet of Thebes.  Teiresias seeks to guide Creon to wisdom despite knowing that Creon is doomed.

Director’s Note: The production will use many institutions of Classical Greek Drama including masks, single location setting and real time action.  Performers begin the play using masks and stylized gestures but as the characters reach their breaking points, masks will be discarded and the actors will begin acting in a more naturalistic style.  The goal is to bring the Classical Greek Drama to a modern audience without abandoning its essential character.
